WHAT’S NEW IN FOOD SAFETY THIS MONTH?
Food safety culture is the new buzzword in the industry; starting with BRCGS Food Version 8 coming up in February 2020, we expect to see more demand for the “shared values, beliefs and norms that affect mindset and behaviour toward food safety in, across and throughout an organization”, as the Global Food Safety Initiative*s (GFSI) technical working group defines it. To help organizations identify and develop their own food safety culture, GFSI has published a position paper regarding food safety culture that deals with three main topics:
- The essential role of executives within an organization (a point that also plays a significant role in the revision of ISO 9001: 2015)
- Factors such as communication, education, cooperation and personal responsibility
- Skills such as adaptability or risk awareness to translate food safety practices from theory to practice
On August 1 BRCGS launched the Global Standard for Packaging Materials Issue 6 – and it is not just the name that was subject to a change. The new BRCGS Packaging Materials – Issue 6 includes six major changes: two key changes concerning the protocol and four key changes regarding the requirements of the former Packaging and Packaging materials – Issue 5 certification.
Changes to the Protocol:
1. Removing the second hygiene category
2. Removing second/split unannounced audit option
Changes to the Requirements:
1. Corrective and preventive action: fundamental clause
2. Emphasis on product quality
3. Product safety and quality culture
4. Pellet, flake and powder control in the plastic industry
After publication of the new version, on August 1, 2019, there is a transition period of six months. The use of Issue 6 is compulsory for all certification audits taking place from February 2020 onwards. Here you can read more about the changes and download the new standard.

In other food safety news: FSSC 22000 Version 5 – Main Changes
On June 3, FSSC 22000 published Version 5 of its certification scheme. One big reason for the revision is the publication of the standard ISO 22000: 2018 last summer, which is used as a basis for the GFSI benchmarked certification scheme. The new version includes mainly structural changes that we will present in this article.
